Renaissance Painting on Panel of Christ Carrying the Cross
I am not an expert but I believe this painting to date pre 1600's. It is oil or tempera on wood panel and depicts Jesus Christ carrying the cross on the way to his crucifixion. There is a paper label on the back that has most of the writing in ink crossed off for some reason but what is still readable says: "portant la croix" which is carrying the cross in French. There is also a number "5" above this written in ink.
I believe this represents the 5th station of the cross and in the painting there is a figure to the right of Jesus who appears to be reaching for the cross. There is a lot of damage to the painting with a lot of the paint missing and there is a section that has white paint? added as a sort of repair? The wood panel is slightly bowed. It is not signed. The painting is a little darker in person than the photos. There are two eyelet screws on the back where it was hung by a wire.
Size - 12 3/8" high by 10" wide. The panel is about 1/2" thick.
