At 5" long and 3" wide, this is an exceptionally large pin by Mary Gage. It is in excellent condition. The stones are rose quartz and purple chalcedony (possibly amethyst but cannot tell within the setting). Each of the 3 stones are approx. 20 x 15mm. See the second photo shown next to a quarter for scale.
Not broadly known outside of a relatively small group of followers and scholars, Mary was born in 1898 in Indiana. She died in 1993. She was self-taught and most of her works resemble those of the Arts & Crafts movement which was named and practiced starting in the decade before she was born. It continued in different countries through the 1920s and influenced major craftsmen and women of all disciplines.
In WWI, she served as a nurse. After, she traveled around the world including spending two years in China which inspired a life-long interest in all things Chinese.
Her major influences and teachers in the jewelry craft came from people she met in Greenwich Village.
Those who do seek out her work understand its value in that every piece is hand-crafted and essentially, one-of-a-kind. This one, due to its size and inclusion of semi-precious stones makes it an outstanding specimen of her work. Museum quality! Priced accordingly.
