This rare pair of Phoenix birds is from the wonderful collection of mudmen and associated porcelains we recently purchased from the estate of Patricia Hardin.
Ms. Hardin was acknowledged have one of the most exceptional collections in existence.
Nowadays collecting mudmen and associated pieces of porcelain has become increasingly popular. While most collectors are starting their collections with more common figures, some have progressed to a more serious level. Whatever your collecting preferences, learning about the meanings and desirable features is fascinating and fun.
This particular offering is for the serious collector. The Phoenix Bird was revered in old China's mythology. They are in two different poses; one preening and the other standing in a stately manner. They are quite rare and in very good condition. The standing Phoenix has what appears to be an old stationery crack. I do not believe it was restored because there is no evidence of any crack or defect in the rest of the neck or plume.
Country of Origin: China.
Medium: Porcelain.
Size: Standing 3 inch; preening 2 1/2 inch.
Condition: The one stable crack in the neck of the standing bird. Otherwise Very Good Vintage Condition.
Circa: 1920s.
