ReUnions is proud to present this lovely Pickard Scenic Vellum handled cake plate decorated in the Yosemite Falls pattern by Seagren. This handsome piece measures about inches in diameter, and about inches handle to handle, and stands about inches tall at the highest point of the handles. The porcelain blank carries the maker's mark for Bernardaud and Company of Limoges France, and the piece is stamped with Pickard Mark 7 (1912-1918). The plate is signed Seagren for the decorator Anna Seagren.
Pickard launched the scenic vellum line in the early 1910s and continued to be produced well into the 1930s. A vellum glaze, also known as bisque, is not smooth and shiny like conventional china glazes. Decorations were typically Neoclassical depictions of ancient ruins, walled gardens, and the like. The vellum surface lends the paintings a soft-focus, dreamy quality. The Yosemite Falls pattern depicts a lake at the feet of Yosemite Falls. Pines and other trees rise along the water's edge, and the mountains appear purplish brown in the haze.
The cake plate is in very good condition. There are no chips or cracks, and the gold rim is mostly intact except for a bit of wear from rubbing around the rim and handles. The decorated surface of the plate is free from utensil marks or scratches, and the artwork is neatly executed. Note that while the decorators generally position their scenes so that they are right-side up when the handles are at the left and right, this particular plate has a diagonal horizon and so the handles sit at 10 and 4 o'clock.

About Pickard China
Wilder A. Pickard founded Pickard China in the 1890s to produce fine hand-decorated china for the American market. Importing blank porcelain from major European makers, Pickard artists designed and executed beautiful hand-painted tableware that was sold in the finest department stores and jewelers. His Chicago studios employed hundreds of decorators and artists through the years, many of whom went on to go into business for themselves. Today, Pickard China produces and decorates its own china here in the US, offering classic and contemporary patterns featuring Pickard’s signature application of 22K gold. Pickard China is featured in the US State Department’s embassies around the world, and they have produced sets for the White House and Air Force One.
