Japanese Arita Antique Teapot Blue w Flying Bird on Back & Bamboo Shape Handle Spout Finial c 1890 - image 1 of 13

This is a beautiful Japanese teapot, Arita, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890.

The pot has a gray-blue glaze, with a dark blue underglaze pattern of flowers and foliage. The blue underglaze patterns are on the front, lid and back. There is a flying blue bird on the back also. Over the glaze on the patterns are hand painted gold and red flowers

The shape of the pot is wonderful. The spout, handle and finial are shaped like bamboo, with spaced horizontal ridges like bamboo, and outlined in gold. The finial is hollow.

The pot is 6 ¾” high to the top of the finial and 7 ¼” from spout to handle. I believe the pot is a medium size.

The handle has an age line at the bottom, and it goes across the handle; it feels to me like it is under the glaze and therefore not a professional repair; however, I could be wrong. I show photos of this area. The handle is sturdy and the line does not present any problems; in fact it is difficult to see.

Some of the gold on the handle is worn off from use. The finial also shows a bit of gold loss, and there is some wear to the gold trim on the edge of the lid.

There is a built-in tea leaf strainer in the interior. With respect to the underside of the lid, the interior underside is glazed, and the outer sides that goes into the pot is not glazed.

The pot does not have a maker’s mark.
